A Message from Nick Homer

The success of a democracy depends upon educated and involved citizens. When we aren’t educated, we make uninformed choices. When we aren’t involved, special interest groups fill the void.

The role of schools is to help our children find their gifts in life and become effective citizens by providing them with information, experiences, and role models.

With reduced funding and increasing class size, DSUSD needs a singular focus on “all things instructional” when making policy and expenditure decisions — not on “nice to haves.” If we do this, we can make DSUSD better, even in these times!

As a 30-year management consultant and former Partner with Price Waterhouse, I have helped hundreds of organizations, in seven countries, with creative problem solving. For the past four years, I have substituted in K-12 in almost every school in DSUSD and PSUSD.

Also, I am the founder of Good Citizen, a non-profit teaching Americans how to be effective citizens. I am a quick study, respect difference, value common sense, and think independently. I am not registered or affiliated with any political party.

Our children are the country’s next generation and most precious resource. We owe it to the country and to our children to give our best effort. Please help me, help the Kids of DSUSD!

My Commitment to the District

I will work with everyone - Superintendent, Board member, union representative, principal, teacher, parent, classified staff, student or community leader - who has ideas or resources that will improve instruction and ultimately learning. And, I will push back on those with other interests.

To Parents

Increased parent involvement can offset the impact of DSUSD's increasing class sizes. These quotes from a former U.S. Secretary of Education emphasize the parents' critical role in a child's education.

“Parents are children’s first and most influential teachers. By reading to children or having them read to us, by making sure homework is done, by monitoring television use, by knowing how children spend their time, parents can have a powerfully positive effect on their children’s learning.”

“Successful family involvement is not a sporadic activity. It is a sustained commitment to instill the habits of learning and to set high expectations. It is making connections to teachers and schools not only when trouble arises, but as a part of the everyday process of children’s schooling.”

To Students

“The purpose of life is to discover your gift. The meaning of life is to give your gift away.”
- David Viscott

School is a place that helps you find your gifts!
